The secret of the deep-rooted popularity of Mana Mizuguchi's work, is probably that she changes the designs to follow the seasons and uses a delicate touch when hand-drawing the motifs with a fine brush. These Kyoto hand-made hand-dyed T-shirts by Mana Mizuguchi are a product we can expect to see more and more of.
Firstly please tell us how your got started in this work?
Even from infancy, I loved to draw, then after graduating from High School I entered a university where I studies fine arts. After graduating from University, I worked actively as a picture drawer, but I still thought about what I did at university where I first experimented with hand-drawing on T-shirts. I gradually became fascinated by the concept of creating garments that portray my drawings.
Why did you think to make your own hand-drawn T-shirts?
I wanted to make things that I would like to wear myself, so that's what I started doing. After wearing my self-made clothes. All my friends started saying they wanted them too!
At first I didn't consider the fact that I could sell my own hand-made products. But having received such encouragement from my friends, I was delighted at the prospect that people would happily pay money for my hand-made garments. The concept of making clothes for others that they would pay for, is very different from the idea of me just making clothes for myself. It is very important when drawing on a T-shirt to get the balance of color and shape just right.
Do you want to convey a message through your products?
To tell the truth, I never thought about it. Generally I just thought to make what I like to wear myself. Looking at a beautiful flower, I just think, maybe I'd like to draw it and wear it. Really that's all I though. It's strange to think that the things I like to draw and wear would be popular with others.
So finally, tell us your thoughts for the future?
I'd like to be thought of as a person who makes nice things. I'm not so concerned with the idea of working in my own store. Rather I'd like to keep expanding my product range and work on new ideas. Now I'm concentrating on T-shirts. Perhaps in the future I'd like to take a different direction and work on things other than T-shirts. Still there are various possibilities still in working with T-shirts. Coloration of the dyeing, forming new interesting shapes from the T-shirt cloth. The possibilities are endless. There's so much room to develop great new ideas that I'd like to pursue my work with T-shirts further.
